Im a 20 year old girl and Im 5'3 and weigh 130. at the beginning of the summer i weighed 110 and can't seem to get back there. Im doing the workouts i used to do but there not helping.

I go to the gym every morning and do 1.5 hours of cardio. I switch machines every 30 min.

I have never felt so uncomfortable and am in need of a new diet and exercise routine. Can you help? Thanks!

Go here to get an idea of your ideal weight and what you can do for protein is this...

Go here to see how many calories you need to eat to lose weight and then...

Make sure at least 30% of your calories come from protein so for example...

If you need to eat 2100 calories a day to lose weight...

700 of those calories should some from protein and since protein has 4 calories per gram...

You would eat 175grams of protein a day (175gs x 4cal =700cals)

Hi Adrian,
I am 5'10 and a little under 400 lbs. I have been lifting weights for muscle mass and dieting to lose fat for a month now. I know they say to take 1 gram of protein per pound that you weigh. Since I do not know my idea weight yet, how much protein should I take? 400 grams seems a like a lot to me. Thanks for your help.

Soy and whey protein shakes are just more sources of protein and no protein is better - You just need protein to help you lose weight and maintain your metabolism easier but...

whey & soy shakes can be made & consumed quickly making it easier and quicker to consume than most protein sources so...

You DON'T have to have soy or whey protein but you DO NEED PROTEIN and if you don't have time to prepare a protein food - You'll want to invest in soy or whey shakes to save time

Hey, I'm 18 and in college...I'm going home in about three weeks and I want to shed at least 10-15 lbs. I'm 5'4 and 230 lbs. My arms and stomach is the main things I want to work on...So if any of you guys have suggestions please email...I've already started Nov. The best ideas I can give you is to see your doctor and ask him if any of the meds are causing weight gain and if so... can they prescibe something else without weight gaining side effects but really - what you need to do first is...

Look at why you can't lose weight and also...

This plan to lose 50 pounds should be a good starting point for you and if you can't exercise... See if you can do any of these weight loss activities and...

I am 5'10", 38 years, 316 lb. I was a basketball player until my 19 and I had my son with 26, when my thyroid stoped working. I take Syntroid 175mcg but since then I keep gaining weight year after year. Until 2 years ago I used to go to Curves but I got a spur in my feet that just kills me even working in a office sitting down all day. Lots of other problems have come with all this fat. I already tried everything. Can you help me with ideas?? I am so discouraged when I diet every day and I don't lose 1 pound a month. Please, I feel old like 80 years old and do not have energy and don't sleep well. But I got to the point that I feel if I don't make something urgent, probably I won't see my son, now with 12 years old, graduate. Heeeeelp!

It's really better if you can eat at least 4 times a day because eating only 2 times a day may slow down your metabolism but...

You may be able to get away with eating 2 meals a day since this diet last for only 3-to-4 weeks but you should really try to incorporate some Meal Replacements or shakes if you don't have time for 4 small meals

Just keep working your way up to 30-to-60 minutes of cardio and then like Julia - try doing some HIIT when you get all of your endurance back

I am 23 years old, weigh 160, and am 5ft 2. I don't feel fat, except for my midsection. I've definitely found a lot of good advice on your site. My one thing I can't give up is coffee. Are my goals totally derailed by that?
Also, I've had two kids, so any workouts I do generally involve them. Do you have any advice for workouts involving small children?
I'm just quitting smoking, so I hope that my endurance levels increase soon, because I get tired after only several minutes of moderate intensity exercise.... Should I be doing more weight training to make up for the low cardio? Or is it okay to say do five minutes here, five minutes there as long as it adds up?

Hi Adrian,

You had responded to me earlier -thanks for your advice. I have a question on interval training.

For my cardio, I had been doing 30 minutes on the elliptical changing between running/jogging (6-7mph) and fast walking (4-5mph) followed by 10 min on the rowing machine.

I've been reading about HIIT and am wondering if using HIIT could be a way to get more out of my work out. Last night I tried it on the elliptical and was only able to do 25 minutes due to the intensity. I did 4 minutes of warmup (4mph) and then 30-45 seconds of intense running (14 mph) followed by an active rest of 2 minutes (3.5-4mph). I did all this with a resistance level of 5 on the elliptical (goes up to 25).

I felt guilty that I didn't spend as much time as I normally would on the machine. By the time I was done I was totally exhausted. Plus the machine says I didn't burn as my calories. I've read that with HIIT that you burn more calories AFTER the workout is over but I'm concerned that I'm not doing the most effective thing.

Following my HIIT last night I did 10 minutes on the rowing machine and 30 minutes of weights.

Do you think HIIT is a good idea for me or should I stick with the 30 minutes of steady state cardio? Should I feel guilty that I can't do it for as long or that it says I burned less calories than my standard steady state workout?

Hey Adrian,
I'm 30 yo, 225 lbs., 5'6 tall, works a desk job, stressed, and is very much inactive. I've recently decided to lose weight (planning to go all the way down to my ideal BMI of 140 lbs ballpark over a 3-year period).

I have trouble doing conventional exercises and picking proper foods to eat because I suffer from severe attacks of gout. I have uric acid crystal deposits on both big toes which makes most exercises and stances painful. Picking healthy foods is also hard.

My main trouble area is my belly which makes my back hurt everyday --I guess that's priority 1.

Can you help me with possibly a weight loss and/or diet program I could follow?

I'd really appreciate your help.

if you're trying to get skinny - then the main thing to do is lose weight so are you overweight or normal weight? and...

If you're just trying to tighten/tone the arms then it's best to use lighter (not TOO light) weights for 3 sets of 8-to-12 reps and running stairs is a great workout

It's going to take some time - maybe 8-t0-16 weeks to reach your goal because let's face it...

You're only 10 pounds overweight so realize you're not going to lose weight THAT fast but shoot for 1/2-to-2 pounds a week and...

Hi Adrian, I'm 5'3 and 143.5 lbs. I started your plan last week and lost 1.5lbs in the first week by refining my diet (small meals, healthy foods, smaller portions) and hitting the gym.

I think I have the diet part down but would like your advice on the work out to make sure I'm getting the most out of my time there.

I worked out 6 days this week. Each day I'm doing the elliptical for 30 minutes alternating between 6-7.5mph and 3.5-4.5 mph. I spend about 18 min doing the higher speed.

Then I'm doing 10 min on the rowing machine at a moderate intensity.

Finally, I do weight lifting for about 30 minutes on the machines (not free weights). Each day I rotate the set of muscles I'm working on - alternating legs, arms and core on different days. There's about 6 or 7 machines I hit on each day.

I'm lifting about 25-37.5 lbs on my arm exercises for about 3 sets of 10 reps. For the legs I'm doing about 37.5-50 lbs, depending on the exercise. Same number of reps and sets. It's enough that I feel as if I'd have difficulty doing any more, once I've finished.

My question is this - is my workout effective? Is there something I should be doing differently? Is it worth it to spend the time on weights? I actually enjoy the weights whereas I'm not really loving my cardio time.

If you have fat on your legs then running, biking, etc will burn overall body fat making your legs look thinner and you will build some muscle from cardio but you won't build THAT much while on a weight loss diet anyway and you may need to use heavier weights anyway (which you probably wont) to build big legs

Hi Adrian,

I'm not incredibly overweight; but I'm still not happy with myself. I want to be able to look good in a bikini or mini shorts or tight clothes.

My first step is to try and make my thighs thinner. But I'm a bit scared going running everyday/cycling/etc to exercise my legs because I've read and heard that doing leg exercises will not make the fat go away; but just turn the soft fat into hard muscle.

Is this true? If it is, then is there an actual way to make my thighs/legs thinner? And if so, how?

I am 15 lbs overweight. I have a degenerative disc disease and need back surgery in 3 weeks. I can do elliptical machine (no impact) and in PT I do exercises with bands cause I can't lift weights. I was retaining water and lost 5 lbs yesterday using your "Lose 10 lbs in 5 days" video on Videojug. Thanks-really helped me finally get the water off and helped my digestion. I have been liftting weights (10 lb.) for my arms and doing sqwats for my legs and butt with them,and have got a exercize cord that I use with my Firm Cardio workout. My next step is 10 lb. ankel weights that I will use tone my legs but not let them get to small. If you're trying to gain mass- just do a regualr mass gaining style of working out which means

1. using moderate to heavy weights
2. Doing at 5-to-10 sets of a compound exercises
3. Doing moderate-to-low reps of only 3-to-8 reps

I would stick to only interval workouts of high intensity for only 15-to-30 minutes max each time and you really only need to do them 2-to-3x a week and i forgot....

You only need to train abs 1-2x a week but also...

gaining and/or maintaining muscle & losing fat also depends on your diet so make sure your diet is at least 30-to-40% protein and as for CLA...

CLA helps with the fat burning process but CLA isn't something you need to stress over as it WILL NOT make or break your training goals and furthermore...

The studies where CLA helped people reduced body fat where mainly for overweight people and...

Hey Adrian,

Thanks for responding to my last question about my weight splits and interval training. My interval training will include:

5 minute warm-up jog
1 minute high intensity run
2 minute moderate run
1 minute high intensity run
2 minute moderate run
1 minute high intensity run
2 minute moderate run
5 minute cool down jog

That's what I meant about interval training. What do you think about it? Should I be doing this 3xs a week or should I do one day interval, one day 1-mile run, and one day light jogging for 20 minutes.

I also have another concern hoping you can resolve it. I'm looking to gain some muscle mass, but not in the bulky way, but the tone way. However I don't know how to work out. Can I do one week bulk workout, and one week tone workout? Or does that work at all?

It would mean a lot if you can address my concern so I'm on the right track.

Sorry another question came up. Should I take CLA before or after a meal?

Hi Andrian, I think your information on this site is phenomenal. I have learned alot. My problem is, I have put on 20 pounds about 5 months ago. Part of my job is food tasting, so I have reduced my portions. I am 40, so I decided to walk 30 minutes a day and weight train entire body 3 times a week. Results, I can do regular push ups and pull ups like GI Jane, strong as an ox. I am very firm and hardly jiggle. Clothes fit better but I still have 30% body fat, it was 42.5.%. I eat between 1500 but sometimes up to 3000 a day. My appetite has been up and I get hungry, is this from my new muscle? How can I get this fat off without loosing all the hard earned muscle? I want to loose by Dec. 1.

Questions keep coming to me as I want to do this right. Do you believe in a "free day"? Eat what you want one day a week and no work out that day? To do this thing for the long haul? Or...does it set you back? Others mentioned this idea..what do you think, for me?

Do you have a sample days meal plan? It seems as looking at the program, you would have to really do alot of figuring and planning to make these small, frequent meals. Today I had 2 hb eggs, 1 cup coffee (before i knew not to),4 figs, 1 slice lox w/goat cheese, 2 tbls of peanut butter, 1/4 cup pecans, chix breast, green beans, 1/4 tomato w/feta & greek olives drizzled w/olive oil. 8 glasses of water. In your opinion was this a good start? Do I need to change alot? I ate this throughout the day to make is 5 small meals.
I did NOT use the calorie counter or any of that.

Yes - that's more reasonable and just to let you know that as you get closer to your goal or after your 5-to-7th month your weight loss rate will slow down as you get leaner and leaner so later on...

You may have to switch over to this advanced weight loss plan but then again...

If you always keep changing up your exercises every time you lose 5 pounds - this may never happen and if your weight loss rate slows down...

my name is stephanie. i am 5'3 and about 195 lbs. i know how to lose weight with diet and exercise, but i need some motivation.

I want to lose 10-15 lbs in about a month and a half. I weight 138 and I'm about 5'5". One thing that bothers me the most are my legs. My calves seem so muscular that when I wear heels, it ruins everything. I was also wondering if benching has any major effects on the arms. I bench a little because I love the feeling of my tight back muscles. I'm doing about 70 lbs or so because it seems to tone me out a bit.

You can end most of your weight loss frustrations by reading this but as for energy...

Try adding more complex carbs like oatmeal to your diet and...

As for working out or exercising - find an "active" hobby like tennis or something that doesn't seem like work and if you can't find a fun active hobby...

I am 5'8" and 3/4 but I just round down to 5'8".... in April 07 I topped the scales at 298lbs and a size 26.... Now I am 215 and a size 16- I want to lose 55-70 more lbs and am having a terrible time with it... I have no energy to work out (I wake up at 5 am to get ready for work)... by the time I get home if I do go for a walk or something I get wired for the evening then the next day drags... I dont eat "alot" of food- only 1200 (at best) calories a day... and I had to work up from that from a poor liquid diet of 6 years ago... (did the liquid diet and found that I could go for a few days without being hungry and have fought to regain "normal" eating habits...) To lose the first 40lbs I took trimspa- then I started walking and using weights... now with the job I am finding a hard time to lose the weight and I know I need to. I am just frustrated with no motivation. I watch exercise shows and get repulsed because I could do what they do- but if I could I would be doing it already- I don't see how people can look at working out as "fun"- I dont see it and for me- there is nothing fun about it... how can I change this? I have tried things that I like to trick me into the exercise thing but it doesnt work.

You're not overweight but it seems to me like by only eating apples & water (as your weight loss method)...

You may have lost muscle as you lost weight causing those undesirable spots on your body so what you need to do is...

#1 - Keep eating the right amount of calories to maintain your weight or lose but...

#2 - Eat a variety of foods and so in your case that means eating more than just apples, so add vegetables, complex carbs & proteins and...

#3 - Start doing some of the body sculpting exercises here and...

In your case you can keep eating school lunch but make sure you're not overeating at lunch and try to make sure your lunch is just weight loss foods if you can and...

Go here to get an idea of how many calories you need to eat to lose weight and divide those calories by 3 or 4 meals It's better to eat 5 smaller meals but being in school may prevent 5 mealsbut for example...

Let's say that you're supposed to eat 300 calories in each of your 5 meals (1500 total) or 500 calories in 3 big meals everyday to lose weight...

When in school at lunch - Just try to eat 300 or 500 calories worth of weight loss foods instead of junk (if you can) but if you can't...

Try to pack healthier foods

The only thing you should do is try to eat a range of 1200-to-1600 calories a day divided by 5 small meals so your body's metabolism will not get used to your diet and always make sure you're working out hard enough to lose weight

How many calories are you eating a day and you need to realize that after a while - your body may slow your metabolism (if you're on a VLCD) slowing down your weight loss rate - Read about VLCD but...

Crevax is good but a solid weight loss program like Jillian's is all the jump- start you need.

Usually women (I'm guessing you're female) that weigh 136 pounds are NOT overweight or they aren't no more than 15 pounds overweight so in your case... You need to do this weight loss plan to loss MAX weight by Dec but...

As for losing 10kg or 20+ pounds by Dec. may not happen but it can probably happen sometime in 2009 and that's only because...

As you get leaner or become NOT too much overweight - you will lose weight at a slower rate

If you want a way to lose weight without starches, pasta, or counting calories - Look at the 8 rules to lose weight fast and even in a dangerous way...

It's unlikely you'll lose 80 pounds in 2 months and unless you're under 5 feet...

You're trying to get VERY Thin and no matter what weight loss method you choose - it's going to actually take longer to lose those last 10-to-20 pounds to become VERY Thin so honestly...

The best thing you can do is my opinion is do this to lose 50 pounds first and then do this advanced weight loss plan to get even skinnier and that'll help you lose at least 60 pounds but it'll take longer than just 2 months

I have alot of lower back fat and I do gymnastics. And everytime I bend over to try to do the bridge I could feel my back fat bubbling up behind me.How can I get rid of my back fat in about 4 weeks without having to signing up or buying things.

Everybody has this problem and I guarantee you the only one who really see's any difference is you and it's only noticeable if you really look at it up close but...

You can do twice the number of sets of calf exercises on your left leg so...

If you did 4 sets of calf exercises on your left leg - you'd only do 2 sets on your right leg

Hello. i am planning on eating around 1400/day i also am planning on doing 45 mins of moderate walking 4-5 times a week and have already started arm sculpting exercises, which i do twice a week, ab exercises which i do twice a week and lower body exercises that i also do twice a week, all of these are about 20 mins a piece. i also am including 20 mins of yoga once a week. will this help me to reach my goal quickly? if not what else can i do to reach my goal?

If you're going to do a juice fast you're not going to have too much energy to do anything and I doubt you'll be able to keep this up for 4 weeks anyway.

Even beyonce only stayed on her fasting diet for 2 weeks

You have to be careful when doing Very Low Calorie diets (VLCD) because you never know if your metabolism is going to slow down to a point where you can't lose weigh even when fasting and...

I have no doubt you'll lose a lot of weight FAST by fasting but...

I'll feel better if you do this fast weight loss diet instead because you are eating 4 small meals a day and although it's also a VLCD - the chances of your body's metabolism slowing down while on it is LOW since you're eating 4 times a day, eating at least 1000-to-1200 calories or more + plus the calories you eat gives you energy to exercise and keep your metabolism running

I'm reading all these articles about how losing anymore than 1 or 2 pounds a week is unhealthy or dangerous. If you are eating 1200 calories per day (3 meals and 3 snacks) and burning a ridiculous amount through exercise (I'm thinking Ali the lady who lost 112 pounds in 5 months), how is it dangerous? What exactly is dangerous about that?

I'm thinking about going on an exercise plan that would have me losing 4 to 5 pounds per week creating a calorie deficit of 1800 to 2500. How could that be dangerous if I'm eating, drinking enough water, taking protein shakes and a multi-vitamin?

Thank you for your web site! I've used your info and had amazing results. I've lost 20 pounds in 1 month. I went from a size 22/24 womens to 18 misses. I lost a huge number of inches too. I have another 72 pounds to go ~ but I'm in for the long haul.

I do the treadmill as soon as I get up for 1 hour, wait 30 minutes and have a whey protein shake. At lunch time, I lift weights at the gym and when I get home I either do The Firm (hi def sculpt for now, the aerobic intense work outs are too much as yet)or Windsor pilates depending on my energy level!

I broke my toe 2 weeks ago and I still managed to loose 4 pounds that week even whe I did not work out for 4 days! Your info about metabolism is spot on. I just ordered Tae Bo abs to switch out my work out once my body adjusts.

Let me first say thank you for the wonderful amount of information you have available on this website. My goal is to tone rather than weight loss. I run three miles every morning on an empty stomach mostly on my treadmill as I do have problems with my knees. I also have a problem with HBP. I am 40 year female. Here is what I perceive as my biggest struggles, motivation and food management. I do well for a few days and then I fall off the band wagon. There are often times when I feel very hungry and I am not able to satisfy my hungur. I eat a high amount of protein with every meal. I am afraid to take Hoodia as I believe that may impact my pressure. I take the following supplements daily, HCA, CLA, Vitamin, Fish Oil, and Flax oil. As far as motivation, I am motivated to exercise but I dont have many people that I can discuss exercising with so I find that I am normally alone when I workout. I am looking forward to any suggestions you may offer. Thanks again for all you are doing!

Hey, I would really like to have a similar body that Matthew McCaunghey has. I have about %15 bodyfat. I have been working out on my home gym for about 3 weeks now. Adrian glad I found your site. I've managed to lose 20 ponds on my own toward a lofty 100 pound weight loss goal, but have a question about dieting. I have a lot of fat around my midsection...belly, butt, upper thighs. It's been recommended that I go on a low-carb diet where I consume no more than 30 carbs a day. Someone else recommended South Beach, which restricts fruit and oatmeal in the first two weeks. Someone else recommends Weight Watchers, and so on and so on. I'm at the point where I'm so confused, I have no idea what to put in my mouth and when. This morning (Sunday) I had 2 hard boiled eggs, half a grapefruit, 2 cups green tea and 2 glasses of water...am I on the right track? I'm 5'5" 220 pounds.

If your legs are getting skinnier then it's probably because you are burning fat off your legs which is a good thing and the only way I can see you losing some leg muscle is if you're doing the HIIT everyday for really long periods of time but...

I'm 1.5m tall, or should i say short, and weighs 45kg. I've left a comment before and you said I wasn't overweight. But many of my friends say I look a little chubby and perhaps need to lose some weight.

My ideal weight is 38kg - 40kg, partly because I'm short and do not want to look and sound heavy.

And also, is eating apples enough to cover the calories I'm supposed to eat? I eat about 3 apples a day. But I'm sure I can eat more if theres a need to achieve the target calories. I do not know how to count calories anyway =/

How about eating only fruits for the entire day or maybe 2 days? Is that what people say detoxication? Will that help in making me lose weight?

So I started the 3-4 week plan to loose 20lbs. I'm 5'7 145 and wish to make my goal weight of 125 before my birthday in December!

I'm excited and today I got up drank 2 glasses or water + green tea and headed off to the gym. At the gym I did 45 min cardio and 20 weight training.

My question is for the diet. I consumed 900 calories today and only 100 of them were from soy protein I had in the morning. I did not have the recommended protein for each meal, instead I added another fruit or veggie. Is this bad? I don't like protein very much. I used to protein and I would feel so bulky that now I'm scared to use it. I know I need the protein to help aide my muscles so i included protein for each meal i had a serving of tuna.

I don't think you'll put on any weight and it's more likely you'll lose or maintain your weight and if you eat only weight loss foods during your allowed eating periods...

You'll greatly increase your chances of not gaining any weight and even if you do gain a few pounds...

I'm 30, I weigh 185 pounds and i'm 5'7". I've been going to the gym 3-4 times a week over a period of 4 years (through 23 years old and 27 years old). I have dropped from 200 pounds to 170 pounds over this period of 4 years.
After that, i quit training and begin running outside 2-3 times a week. I find it difficult so i've stopped. ( main reasons : allergies, legs, lung).

I have been using your workouts and they work. I have a different problem than most women (I assume). I used to be in every sport working out everyday; When I was 17. Now, 21 and am the same weight after a few years of not working out 6' 190lbs. I like being large but miss the muscle. My BP is perfect and my heart/general health good. I have started working out and have lost 8 lbs! Should I just increase weight or just reps.? Both?
Do I keep same amount of weight reps just increase food intake? I don't mind gaining weight just as long as I make what I have into muscle in the end. I have 25 BMI and 2 months before was 28! but I want to gain or stay the same. Help ... no more weight loss!

If you have a short term goal then meaning you want to lose weight in under 2 months then YES - taking too many cheat days like that may hurt your goals but...

If you have a Longer term goal then it's okay to have a cheat day every once in a while but I wouldn't do every weekend and I'd prefer if you have a cheat day like once every 10 days

You may be going back to the exact same habits that made you gain weight in the first place.

Hi Adrain, I am on the 20lbs in 3-4 weeks plan. Is it possible to stay on this longer than the 3-4 weeks. Can I stay on it for 8-16 weeks. Is this too much? I suffered a stroke 8 years ago & gained approximately 170 lbs. I know this to be unhealthy since I've developed type 2 diabetes for which I take medication as well as for hypertention. I've tried just about every diet out there & lost tons of money on numerous weight loss clinics to no avail. I'm physically impaired & don't want to live the rest of my life like this (400 lbs +) which will probably be shortened if things don't change. Everybody's made differently so you and your friend may or may not get the same results but what I can tell you is this...

Both you and your friend will look better from what're doing and even if you do "gain" it'll probably be muscle and...

when you gain muscle - you'll look slimmer anyway but if you're scared you might get real bulky muscles...

That shouldn't happen if your diet is normal meaning... You don't eat a whole lot to pack on huge muscles and/or if you use lighter weights and higher reps but...

No real huge muscle gains should happen anyway if you keep your diet in check by not eating way too much to accumulate massive muscles

It may be changes in your water weight so for example...

If you eat a lot of carbs one day - you may put on extra water weight or if the next day you eat less carbs and more protein - you may lose water weight and to stop water weight changes - the best thing you can do is...

1. eat a balanced diet
2. avoid too much salt and..
3. drink water and...
4. make sure you're not taking any medications that cause water weight changes

Hello I've been married 4 years and I find my weight our of control. I'm now 41 years old and when I married I weighed 200 pounds. Now I weigh in at 245 pounds. About 3 months ago. I started walking at least 2 miles a day. Before I started walking I weighed 238. I think I look a little firmer. However my cloths are not really fitting any better. I've just started getting much more exercise. I'm walking 3-5 miles pretty much everyday. I've bought some 0.5kg weights to take walking and I've bought a 2kg weight to start off with to tone my arms. So i think I'm getting off to a good start and enjoying it. I am 36 years old - I am 5'9" and weigh about 260 pounds. I have a thick frame, and there was once a time where I was solid muscle.

I was very athletic, and at one point, I was even able to bench press 300 lbs - However, years of sitting still, working (computer work) and night school (got 2 degrees at night in 13 years) have made me a fat A**.

I feel TERRIBLE! I have terrible heartburn, all my joints ache, I am extremely tired all the time, I hate going out, because I have such a low self esteem - I am very self conscious of this...I don't know what to do....

You're doing everything right and the only thing I see you're doing wrong is that you're worrying too much about what the scale says (Read #9 from "10 ways to quickly break out of a weight loss plateau") because...

If other people are telling you that you look GREAT then that's a sign what you did worked and you firmed up, gained muscle that made you look better but...

Im having a dip in motivation at the moment. i started working out seriously(5-6days a week, spending 1H30-2hours in the gym, sometimes twice a day) since june(about 2 and a half months ago).

i thought my hard efforts would bear their fruit as i faithfully gave my ALL during training. i wasnt following a diet plan, but eating sensibly(about 1400-1800 Cal p/day), but must admit that at times i cheated on cookies from being too anxious/ depressed about my SLOW weight loss.

I started at 147lbs and 29.7% bodyfat:June, 2nd, 2008.
Today im floating between 140 and 143lbs, and bodyfat at 27.8%: August, 13th, 2008.
Im highly disappointed about these results and slowly losing hope(i started binging on cookies/muesli bars again since sunday and cant seem to find the courage to focus again and keep going).i also started a high protein diet(powder desserts and bars) about 2weeks ago, thinking it would boost my weightloss, but im hungrier and more frustrated than ever now!!
i also thought i would lose faster as im higly dedicated and work out a REAL sweat at the gym. i do all the gym classes: 45mins each(Body pump, RPM, step,aeroboxing, aerobics, bodytone) plus free weight training, eliptical machine, stepper and running on the treadmill, as part of my weekly workouts.
but i get the feeling its not working/going as fast as id like.
My friends, boyfriend and gym instructor say that im looking slimmer, but i cant see it, and the way they say it sounds like there's a "BUT..." missing; like "but you still got a bit more work to do".Im SO desperate to reach that high point and feel the pounds shedding off and feel the pride and admiration frm everyone...

My physique:
ive got a Beyoncé/ j-lo type body(small frame, small waist, african booty and im 5'3").im a little "overweight" around the butt and hip area and so would love to change my lowerbody and look like Beyoncé did when she lost weight for her role in Dream girls.(i did the master cleanse in May, it worked at first few days, but i put on the weight plus a kilo or two at the end of the 10days, regardless of my committment)

my objectives:

i would also like to find the best workouts to slim down and tone the lower half of my body without adding bulk(or weight to the scale).
i'd like to slim down my knee and thigh area, firm-up and round-up my butt, and tone my lower back and calfs.

i've heard contradicting info about doing too much cardio not being good for you, and too little inefficient to lose fat, so im kinda lost here.

please could you help me out by prescribing a sensible workout plan(the more intense the better: i want this REALLY bad and im willing to do the work!!! ^^,)
and if possible a diet/ eating plan to help me lose 22lbs in 3-4months or before the end of the year(its my Xmas wish to be at 122lbs)

I hope im not asking too much!

With your busy schedule - Try doing the best way to lose weight fast and since you're not TOO MUCH overweight...

You're going to have to fit in some exercise so add 4-to-5 times a week of doing 20-to-45 minutes of weight loss intervals or fast weight loss workouts 1-to-2 times a day and if you don't have time for that

Hey Adrian,

I am a 21 year old that is 5'2" and weighs about 143lbs. I have a thick body shape but with a small waist however I still have some fat around my waist area. I am really interested in starting a diet and exercise routine so that I can go down to 120-125 but still maintain my curves. However I am a busy full time college student with a part-time job, a part-time internship and involvment with an organization on campus. I want something that will not require 3 hours of daily gym workouts. Please help!

Hello again Adrian, I have been enjoying your website and found so many helpful things on it but I am now frustrated because I just recently found out that I have a Thyroid problem and it's the underactive one that keeps you from losing weight. I would like to know if you know of any plan that will help someone that has a thyroid condition try to lose the weight. I was doing so great with the exercising and following a good diet and now to hear this information when I have been struggling to lose the weight is very disapointing. I'm not going to quit doing what I have been doing but I would like to prove that theory of not being able to lose weight with this problem wrong. So please let me know if there is a plan to do so. Hi Adrian,

I am 22, 5'8", 170 and need to lose a few more pounds. I recently sprained my ankle, and I know I am supposed to rest it etc. However, I am going into the Air Force, and I can not be sedentary for a few weeks while my ankle heals. Even though you gained 6 pounds - DO YOU look 6 pounds slimmer or about the same because if you do...

Don't worry about it becuz you're gaining muscle which keeps weight off and helps you burn more fat in the long run plus it makes you look better while losing weight (burning fat)

I started working out 4 weeks ago alternating between strength training and cardio 5-6 days a week but when I weighed myself 2 days ago I had gained 6 pounds. I had not really changed my diet but was eating much less and not eating junk food at all. Can you tell me why I gained the weight?

Hi, this site is great. One question I have that I ever can't seem to get help answering.... In 2007, I was working out steadily for a few months, trying to replace fat with muscle. I ended up taking off 4 months this year and have yet again been working out consistently for 6-7 weeks (4 or more times per week, including weight training). i'm eating small meals, more protein and for the most part, barely any junk. I've noticed a difference, espc in my upper body. I'm 5'7" and have gone for a size 8 to a size 6, but I'm struggling because I still feel like I'm skinny fat. I can see that I'm losing weight and building muscle, but most noticeably in my upper half, not in my butt or hamstrings as quickly as I'd like. My belly has slimmed down but still has a fat tire around it. I know I'm close to the goal, but my question is:

How long does it take to really build the muscle back in your butt and hamstrings, to have really toned, strong legs when the muscle is small? If I continue on with eating 100+ grams of protein, small meals and weights, should I be there in 6 weeks? I need a target so not to get frustrated and give up or lose my motivation that I will never get my muscle back. I'm only 31!! Thank you!!!

Adrian thanks for the plan I'm exactly about 50-55 pounds over weight. I'm short 5" even. I'm Indian so I wanted to know if eating Indian food will be okay, as far as the way we cook veggies or is raw better? I'm not using much oil when i cook and I'm using wheat instead of white rice or white flour. I HAVE to lose 20 pounds by the end of August. I was wondering if I could do the 20 pounds in 3-4 weeks first please let me know. I started back working out 6 times a week now. I'm doing 30 mins of cardio first thing in the morning when I wake up then in the afternoon I'm doing either Jullian Michael's 30 Day Shred, Power Sculp or using the workout's in Jullian's 30-Day Diet and Fitness Plan for the Strongest, Sexiest You at the gym and an additional 30 mins of cardio. Hi I'm writting b/c I need to lose 50-55 pounds and fast. I've tried lots of different diets but it doesn't seem to work. I hired a personal trainer for the past 4 months at the gym and haven't lost a pound. I got so upset I wasn't losing any weight and working out 2 hours 4 times a week, I just stopped going. If you have an emergency situation where YOU HAVE to lose 20 pounds like before a wedding or trip to the beach then...

Do everything you can to make your weight loss deadline which is doing all 30 days of Jillians plan but...

If no weight loss emergency - Cut back to 20 days or LESS and...

Even if you do cut back to 20 days or less... The chance you'll lose 20 pounds all depends on how overweight you are

If you've never done the Jillian Micahels DVD until now...

You should see some pretty good (weight loss & firming) results with it since it's the first time you've done it and...

If your fitness level is low meaning you've never worked out or haven't in a while then...

YES - you may not want to workout everyday for 30 days and maybe cut back to 20 days out of 30
