Responses to "3 simple ways to work your lower abs"

Actually, there IS a difference between your upper and lower abs. Your upper abs consist of the rectus abdominus and the internal obliques. Your lower abs consist of external obliques and transversus abdominus. And there are different ways to work both your upper and lower abs separately. These exercises you show mainly work only your upper abs, which includes the rectus abdominus, or the muscle that gives you the "six-pack." While it is important to work both parts of your abs, your lower abs are more important than your upper abs because they are the ones that help prevent back pain in the future. In your workout, the part where you lower your legs to the floor would work your lower abs as long as you don't arch your lower back on the way down. If you do arch your lower back (so your spine comes off the ground), then you aren't working your lower abs. Also, raising your legs farther up in the air over your head only works your upper abs. If you want to work your lower abs, still raise your toes to the ceiling, but you don't have to raise them that high. Think about breathing out through your mouth and pulling your belly button in to tighten your lower abs. Just a couple pointers that you may find helpful.

hey adrian,
im a sixteen year-old male, and i've been doing this exercise for about 2 weeks now, i do 4 sets of 10 reps, and on the description, yuo said that i should feel that my lower ab is tighter after the 3 workout, and i dont think i really feel a difference.
i weigh about 110 lbs and i am around 5'4". im a skinny guy, with a flat stomach, but i cant seem to get rid of the fat that keeps me from seeing my abs, am i doing the right exercise?
i do them every other night, and ive been doing the second one out of the 3 workouts, and yes, i do feel burn, but only on the 4th set, and aroun the last 5 or so reps.
thanks mate

hi adrian

i am 155cm tall with a 26inch waist and i weigh at 49kg. i practice taekwondo frequently. my body proportions are good but my tummy is all squishy and soft. does it mean that i have fat tummy or it means that i just need to tone the muscles up? so by doing this exercise i can achieve flat and toned lower abs right?

Thank you. I know in order to see my newly developed ab muscles, I must 1st burn off the fat around my mid section. In addition to reducing my calorie intake, what is the best cardio/fat burning exercise I can do to burn fat the quickest (other than running)?

Lisa | 04.28.09 - 6:12 am

Lisa,

This'll help you pass the push test

Adrian Bryant | 04.21.09 - 8:34 pm

I am in the military and I have to do 40 'correct' push-ups in 1 minute to pass my fitness test. I am skinny and have really skinny arms. I hardly have any upper body strength. I can barely do correct 'female' push-ups. I think I have to strengthen my shoulders, back and arms, but do not know how. Which exercises can I do that I can see results in the quickest time possible to help me pass the push-up portion of my upcoming test? Thank you, Adrian

Myles S,

It's not pounds - you need a low bodyfat % to see abs

I agree with Adrian. Diet and exercise are very important and there are many factors involved in getting a six pack. Targeting your lower abs is excellent for core stability. For further information, please check out my lower ab workout article. Cheers!
