Hassan,

Your protein intake should be consistent day-by-day

#46
Quick question bro: On day's one does NOT work out, how much protien per pound of body mass must one take? (assuming a not-so-active lifestyle on non-workout days)

Dustin,

Will smith is a former Ectomorph turned Mesomorph but being an Ectomorph at first made it easier for him to pack on muscle + NOT gain too much fat while gaining muscle

#44
Is Will Smith a mesomorph or ectomorph or a comination of both?

Dustin | 08.08.08 - 3:09 pm
#43

Dustin,

you can do these special exercises here to get a bigger upper body

Avoid these foods

The ab workout you're doing now is over training and it's probably doing no good and it's too EZ if you can do it every morning so Go here and do this six pack ab workout instead

#42

Hi I'm fourteen years old and in pretty physical condition I want to build a body like Will Smiths so when I get older I look like he did in I Robot is there a special exercese I could do to look like him (I am on the lean side so I relise I need to start out trying to look like him in Ali before I can look like him in I Robot)

P.S. Is there certion foods I should avoid

I forgot to add this I dont care if it takes a long time (no disipline no chance)

Last thing I think I might be overtraining everymorning I do 100 crunches, about 60 of leg lifts from a chair, and a lot of times I do them a night as well

SSorry I swear this is the last thing but I have 9% body fat,my BMI is 18.7, and my weight is 19.5

Damon,

I already answered this question for you somewhere else but here's the same answer again...

Damon,

as far as you losing max fat while maintaining muscle mass - YOU won't be overtraining but I would still limit the "circuit" training to 1-2x a week and...

If you want to grow bigger muscles then you want to lay off the circuit training and just do intervals 3-to-4 times a week and...

It's best to take glutamine along with protein after working out but the good news is that since you got ON Whey you don't need to buy glutamine because ON whey has plenty of glutamine in it

If you still need help - just contact me again

#38

Great site!

Got a few questions. I am 6'2 about 235 and I am doing the "gain mass and lose weight at the same time routine." Formerly worked out 4x a week. Started this plan this morning.

If I do the second circuit training routine 3x a week (M, W F)(first thing in the morning), am I safe doing short intervals 2x a week on the elliptical (T, TH)?

Also- using the calculator (mass/lose weight), it states I should "Do upper body weight training exercises 1-to-2 times a week, lower body 1 times a week, and abdominal exercises 2 times a week in the evening." I won't be overtraining if some exercising of the same body parts, right?

Lastly, I am using the ON whey protein (2 scoops- 10oz of soy milk immediately after workouts). Should I be using glutamine? And if so, when?

After reading your site this past weekend, I was a little confused trying to link some of these concepts.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Michael

Read how to build or muscle while burning fat at the same time to solve your problem but...

One thing that you're doing wrong is that you're doing your cardio too long and probably at lower intensity.

I would switch to 20-to-40 minute higher intensity workouts like intervals

#36
Hi, I am 23, 5'9" 168lbs. 11.7% body fat and have been working out for 5 years now. I was blown away by Will's physique in I am Legend, that is what I want to look like. I have built a solid frame but want to chizzle away fat now to see more definition. Everything I seem to do doesnt help. I work out 3-5 days a week. I perform cardio 3 days a week, for 30-45 mins each, and lift at least 3 days a week breaking up large muscle groups and doing 3 sets of 10-15, increasing the weight each set. Can you please advise me on what types of workout I should be doing to lose body fat but NOT lose muscle...and how many times a week I should be performing them. Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

I am mainly doing chest and arm exercises like the weighted dips and bicep curl. I also do some push ups and sit ups too. I do 8 sets of 5 reps on every excersise. And as for the results I saw it myself that it looked like I was getting bigger and my brother said that it looked like i filled out more... accept i lost weight lol.. wierd huh?

#33

Brian,

Tell me what exercises you're doing along with how many reps and sets.

I (YOU) may just have to adjust the weight poundages and sets plus...

We may not have to change your calories but we may have to adjust your amounts of protein, carbs, and fats and...

Make sure you're taking some whey mixed in 10oz water + 10g of creatine & 10g of glutamine mixed in juice after working out to speed up muscle recovery & growth.

Get back to me so we can both figue this thing out and one last question.

Do you feel you look better or has anyone else noticed a change

#32

hey me again..... I have another question..

I've been following the diet and exercise thing you gave me and im already starting to see results. The thing is though I lost 3 pounds. Im not complaining because I can see results but im just wondering if I will gain some pounds of muscle soon.

Brian | 04.30.08 - 11:00 pm

#31

nelson,

Here's a basic muscle building diet

There's many ways you can vary sets & reps for muscle SIZE but basically...

More Muscle mass = Doing mostly compound exercises (exercises that work many muscles like Bench, squats, & powercleans) + High number of sets + low reps like 3-to-8 reps

Hi,

I have been looking at ur website a lot because I wanted to try and gain more muscle as well as muscle mass. I am about 6'1 214 lbs and probably about 15-16% body fat. I wanted to try and get to about the same size that will smith was in I Robot. I know my weight is probably as close as his was in the movie, but for some reason I don't think I'm nearly as big. I workout a diff body part 5 days a week. Do you know of anything I can do to help me gain more muscle mass or any supplements that would help me do this? And what kind of diet would also help me reach my goal?

nelson |   04.24.08 - 7:10 pm
#29

Brian,

You should work each bodypart 1-to-2 times a week and you should expet to gain at least a pound of muscle every 7-to-10 days but ifyu're a true beginner - you may see results much quicker.

The main thing is to eat right, do at least 5 sets of the exercises you choose, and do 5-to-reps.

P.S. - you only need to do 1-to-2 exercises for each bodypart

#28
ok last question..

How many times a week should I do these workouts and when do you think I will meet my 5-10pound goal?

Brian | 04.19.08 - 2:01 pm
#27

Brian,

Use this for your basic muscle building diet plan and also see The 7 best muscle building foods & supplements to eat

Since you're already probably lean i would limit cardio or PURE fat-burning activites to only 30 minutes 3 times a week.

For gaining mass - make sure you use the basic diet plan and use moderate-to-heavy weights for 5-to-8 sets of 5-to-10 reps with some of the muscle building workouts here

Remember to contact me if you need more help

#26

ok thanks for clearing that up....

Im trying to gain weight in muscle. I currently weigh 130lbs and I want to put on about 5-10 pounds of muscle as fast as I can. My body fat percentage is low and my metablism is quite high so what type of workout do you suggest I do and what should my diet consist of?

Also I want to try this without using any supplements. Thanks!

#25

Brian,

Not true - soreness usually occurs most in people who don't workout a lot or people who are trying a brand new routine for the first time and...

The only thing you need to worry about is if you're using enough intensity & workout variation to reach your goals.

Contact me again if you have any more questions

#24
I have a friend that says if your not sore the next day after a workout that your not gaining any results. Is this true?

Aaron,

I can't honestly prescribe anything to help with your back problems because I'm not a therapist but...

As for if walking is better than running...

Both workouts will burn fat but running you can burn more claories in less time and the harder or more intense you workout (in this case the running would be more intense) the more of an afterburn effect you'll get - afterburn means...

After you've worked out intensly your body continues to burn calories even 'After' you've finished working out so...

Is one better? NO but... You'll achieve your fat loss goals faster running

#22
I'm a 30 yr. old male, and I have a problem doing core workouts because of lower back pain. Is there any workouts I can do to prevent this? Because I want to get my core together. Also is walking at a steady pace is better or the same as running? Thank you

Alright nevermind, my body fat percentage is about 19. What should I do to look like that?

Chris | 03.26.08 - 10:30 am
#18

Chris,

Getting a body like Will smith had in Iam Legend depends on X things.

1. How much bodyfat do you have now? - The higher your current bodyfat percentage is the longer It's going take you to achieve a body like Will Smith's but... At 167 pounds I'd guess your bodyfat is somewhat low - right?

2. How much time you're willing to put in getting ripped doing certain bodysculpting exercises. - For example... The upper body exercises here will help you get ripped fast to achieve that will smith look but...

To really answer your question - It should take you at the most maybe 5-to-8 weeks to notice your body taking a Will Smith 'Iam legend' type form.

#17
Hey, I want a body like Will Smith has in I Am Legend. Im 18 years old, about 167 pounds and about 5'10". What do you think I could do to get a body similar to his? How long would it take? Thanks,

Isabella,

Protein is great for weight loss but remember - you only gain weight from overeating and since protein helps regulate appetite - the chances of you overeating is LOW.

Read this protein weight loss article: http://www.nowloss.com/protein-w...weight- loss.htm

#15

Adrian, I asked this question in one of my last entries but you didn't really answer it. However, I get the feeling that taking protein powder as part of my diet is okay in helping me to achieve my desired goals? I read some where that if you are trying to lose weight, than to avoid taking protein powder b/c it's used mainly for building muscle but I figure if you incorporate it into your diet, it could help you to lose weight, right?

Thanks again.

Isabella,

I'm in the U.S. & I get all my supplements from Affordablesupplements.com (i hope I spelled it right) and I don't know of any Canadian sites and by the way... I just finished a 5lb jug of rocky road recently and I didn't like it that much so I'm going back to chocalate

#13

Adrian, are you from the U.S. or Canada? I'm from Canada and have made some purchases at GNC but find their prices $$$. I did some research on-line and noticed that many fitness enthusiasts buy their products on-line. However, all of the sites that were recommended, are U.S. with U.S. pricing. I checked out bb.com but it's U.S. cost. If I ship it to Canada, it's $20 for shipping! Do you know of any Canadian on-line sites where I can buy ON or other products at a discounted or lesser cost vs. GNC?

Thanks.
P.S. I love the Vanilla Ice Cream Flavour. I read that Rocky Road is good too.

Isabella,

Optimum Nutrition is the best - I just orderd a 10 pound bag (chocalate) today and Yes... i have tried Nitro-tech and like you - I also don't like the taste and let me add this... The guys & gals at the gym I work at like Optimum Nutrition also but their favorite flavor is vanila or cookies and cream

#11

Thanks for the articles Adrian.

You're right. I DO know what to do. It's just a matter of getting and maintaining that discipline and consistency that I use to have and do so well with. I think that it will take some hard work and determination to stay focused.

I have another question. I have been taking protein powder as a post-workout snack during some of my resistance training workouts. On average, I may have 2-3 drinks/week using 1 scoop. I have been using Optimum Nutrition, which I hear is a very good protein source. Would you agree with this? I am taking it more or less to help me keep my hunger at bay, build muscle, lose body fat and account for some of my protein intake for the day. I have found that my energy level is increasing a bit during my weight lifting and I am able to bench press with a bit more ease compared to when I first started my program a month ago.

I have a tub of Nitro-Tech but don't like it. It doesn't mix as well plus, it doesn't sit well in my stomach.

Hi,

I just noticed something that is a typo error. 'I don't want to have a shapely, toned, lean physique.' It should read, 'I WANT to have a shapely, toned, and lean physique.' Oops! lol.

Hi,

I don't exactly want a body like Will Smith because I'm a female. However, I do want to achieve a very toned and well-defined, lean physique. I use to weigh 213lbs. and worked VERY hard over a long period of time to get down to 138lbs(23%bf). Unfortunately, I gained 8lbs. during the past year due to personal problems and loss of focus. I did switch up my program by using exercises that I found in Oxygen magazine and purchased two books by fitness professionals. It helped but I noticed that my motivation has dwindled somewhat.

In addition, dedication to my meals hasn't been 100%. Here's an overview of my meals:

Breakfast is great (oatmeal, 2 egg whites, scrambled)

Lunch - I sometimes wait too long to eat due to schedule but this is usually whole wheat pasta with veggies; tuna sandwich with veggies; or
brown rice/beans/hummus/veggies.

Dinner is usually fish/veggies or egg white/1 egg omelete with some type of veggie or sometimes whole wheat pasta with shrimp and mushrooms in a marinara sauce.

Snacks include Optimum Nutrition protein powder - 1 scoop, 2 pieces of fruit (apple/pear and/or banana), boiled egg, grain toast with natural peanut butter.

My problem: I tend to snack after dinner and/or after lunch/before dinner. I am trying to bring more snacks with me and eliminate eating after dinner.

Goal weight: 130-133lbs (I'm 5'4.5 inches tall) and reduce bodyfat. I don't want to have a shapely, toned, lean physique.

Question: How do you stay focused and stay on track especially when other people around you are not working towards the same goals (I live at home and it can be hard).

Thanks.

Kieran,

I'd recommend doing strength training first and if you're trying to lose as much fat as possible...

I'd recommend you run (or do some weight loss activity) everyday while strength training 2-to-4 times A week

Hope this helps and if you need more help just contact me

#5

Thanks, your comments were great! I think I'll mix running up with maybe a bit of rope jumping (this works great on a rebounder, those bouncy mini trampolines)...but one final question: would you recommend strength training after running, or before, or on separate days? Example, running Monday, strength training Tues,,,etc. Again, thanks, for any replies. Kieran

Kieran | 03.08.08 - 9:42 am

#4

Kieran,

Running and most other weight loss activities are good for fat loss but...

Once your body gets used to all the running you're doing it may not be that effective for burning fat so...

To keep seeing results - You need to run for longer times or distance, you can run faster or the best thing you can do...

Is do a different fat burning exercise to trick your body into burning fat again and to finally answer your main question--

You'd be better off doing BOTH strenght training & running (or other fat burning activities) for fat loss and...

If you have any problems reaching your body image or fat loss goals - please contact me again

#3

Hi, I love running. I love the mental buzz it gives me but lately I've been reading that it might be a waste of time for fat loss and that strength trainging would be better. Thing is, I HATE gyms. I started doing pushups and chair dips and chin ups at home on top of my runs (I run three times a week) but would I just be better off with the strnngth training for fat loss? Thanks for any replies,

Kieran | 03.07.08 - 2:22 pm

#2

Darrell,

I simply don't know the answer to that - (I'd have to research)

#1

I noticed his cardio was running in the morning. Was it on an empty stomach? BCAA's? Was it purely steady state work or interval based. Thanks!
